Medical Certificates

  1. A person must hold
    1. A first-class medical certificate when exercising the privileges of an ATP certificate
    2. At least a second-class medical certificate when exercising the privileges of a commercial pilot certificate
    3. At least a third-class medical certificate
      1. When exercising the privileges of a private, recreational, or student pilot certificate
      2. When exercising the privileges of a flight instructor certificate if the CFI is acting as PIC or a as a required pilot flight crewmember
      3. Prior to taking a practical test that is performed in an airplane for a certificate or rating at a recreational, private, commercial, or ATP certificate level
  2. A person is not required to hold a medical certificate when
    1. Exercising the privilege of a flight instructor certificate if the person is not acting as PIC or serving as a required pilot flight crewmember
    2. Exercising the privilege of a ground instructor certificate
    3. Taking a test or check for a certificate, rating, or authorization conducted in a flight simulator or flight training device
  3. Duration of a medical certificate
    1. A first-class medical certificate expires at the end of the last day of
      1. The sixth month after the date of examination for operations requiring an airline transport pilot certificate
      2. The 12th month after the date of examination for operations requiring only a commercial pilot certificate
      3. The period specified in item c. for operations requiring only a private, recreational, flight instructor (when acting as PIC), or student pilot certificate
    2. A second-class medical certificate expires at the end of the last day of
      1. The 12th month after the date of examination for operations requiring a commercial pilot certificate
      2. The period specified in item c. for operations requiring only a private, recreational, flight instructor (when acting as a PIC), or student pilot certificate
      3. A third-class medical certificate for operations requiring a private, recreational, flight instructor (when acting as PIC), or student pilot certificate expires at the end of the last day of
        1. The 36th month after the date of examination if the person has not reached his/her 40th birthday on or before the date of the examination.
        2. The 24th month after the date of examination if the person has reached his/her 40th birthday on or before the date of examination.
